Union Bank sponsored a team of students from Vembadi Girls' High School, Jaffna who participated at the Global Commerce Quiz 2011 for Governor's Challenge Trophy organized by the Shippers Academy (SA) Colombo held at Ceylon Continental Hotel on 13th December 2011.

The underlying purpose of this programme was to expand the knowledge and interest of the participants in the vast area of global commerce and also aimed at using quizzing as a mind sport as to "how much they know" as well as "how fast they can recall, what they know". Being a team contest, it also aimed to promote team work and camaraderie amongst the participants. The Governor's Challenge Trophy was introduced for the first time in Sri Lanka. The event was organized with the participation of Central Bank of Sri Lanka, The Export Development Board, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and International Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka. The International Quizzing Association conducted the quiz.
